Metalforming Centre Hosts Qualicoat

Twelve member companies were represented at the recent Qualicoat meeting held at the National Metalforming Centre in the Midlands. The multi-storey offices form a centre of excellence for the midlands which historically steeped in metals engineering. Not only is the centre home to Qualicoat UK & Ireland it also home to the Aluminium Federation as well as several other organisations.

Discussing membership during the meeting it was revealed that three UK aluminium systems companies, who undertake in-house powder coating, are currently seeking Qualicoat approval. It was commented that membership now well exceeds half the capacity of the UK powder coating industry and that is would only be a matter of time until all powder coaters sign up to the Qualicoat standard.

During the technical update members discussed feedback from the European working groups on new standards for ‘Qualideco’, decorative finishes on powder coat finishes which is being applied in the UK by several powder coaters, primarily for internal use in shopfitting and associated industries.

The UK are also to commence a new study of the pre-treatment process for the Seaside Class of finishes suitable for seaside locations and industrial applications. The process is to be clearly documented and put to Qualicoat Europe for formal acceptance in early 2009.

A further European working group is being set up to look at the aluminium base material as it is felt that variances in composition could effect performance and life expectancy. The UK would be taking an active role in the research.

Finally the members were offered a presentation from Michael Taylor of Gee & Co. Who presented an up to date review of where we are with UK liquid effluent disposal via sewer systems. Finally members were offered a buffet lunch and a chance to network on subjects discussed during the meeting.
